About Judge John W. Wilson

 

 

Judge John Wellington Wilson has been appointed to the Circuit Court of Cook County,  First Judicial Subcircuit by the Illinois Supreme Court in July 2021.  He was previous employed as an assistant public defender with the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender since 1997.  Judge Wilson’s last assignment with the office was serving as the acting Chief in the Sixth Municipal District – Markham Division.  Prior to this managerial assignment, he was the homicide and felony supervisor in the Public Defender’s Markham Division.  Before John joined the management ranks he was a member of the elite Homicide Task Force Unit (HTF) in the George S. Leighton Criminal Courts Building.  Before joining HTF, he was assigned to the office’s Markham Division assigned to misdemeanor, juvenile delinquency, felony trial, and homicide cases.  As an experienced litigator, he has tried over 70 criminal jury trials, including death penalty cases, and over 100 non-jury trials. 

 John works as an adjunct professor at UIC John Marshall Law School’s Summer College to Assess Legal Education Skills (SCALES) program.  He has served on the review committee for the Cook County Judicial Advisory Council Violence Prevention Grants.  John has also served as a panelist and lecturer at various Continuing Legal Education seminars, and served as a trainer and mentor for law clerks and many of the new assistant public defenders working for the office.  He was also one of the initial criminal law practitioners of the Sixth Municipal District’s Drug Court program.  John is also a former Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach for Wilbur Wright Community College.  Prior to going to law school and joining the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender, John worked as an administrator with the City Colleges of Chicago.   

John was born and raised in Chicago, living on the Southside of the city.  He graduated from Lindblom Technical High School.  John received his undergraduate degree from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, and received his juris doctorate degree from Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law.  He has two children, Hannon and Olivia.  Hannon is a senior at Xavier University of Louisiana studying biology and premed.  Olivia is a freshman at Dillard University in New Orleans.

Judge John Wellington Wilson is rated Highly Qualified, Qualified or Recommended by all of the bar associations.

 

Mission Statement

“…and Justice for all” is a phrase in the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States of America, and the vow that I make to the citizens and visitors of Cook County. Too often, these words are spoken but are rarely practiced or felt in our communities. Therefore, I have accepted and am running to retain my position as Judge for the Circuit Court of Cook County. For the past 25 years as an attorney, I have served as a voice for the voiceless. Now as a Judge, I provide an ear for those who have gone so long without being heard. As a Qualified Judge, I will continue to provide the necessary change in the justice system that our communities deserve. I will treat each person who enters the courtroom Fairly with dignity and respect.

My fundamental belief is that each person should be treated with Compassion, and I am committed to Justice and Fairness for All!
